Composed and performed live by Craig Smith and Dave Copenhaver.

The Parasite is a live musical performance and multimedia art display created by the artist Craig Smith and professional bass player and sound engineer Dave Copenhaver. The music and imagery presented in this performance were written by Smith and Copenhaver in 2011 as Artists in Residence at the OK Mozart festival in the state of Oklahoma. Their performance and visual art display includes large-scale video projections and a sixty-minute live musical soundscape performed by the artists. Smith and Copenhaver’s Parasite is based on the fable by the same name written by Michel Serres (1980). Serres’ text figuratively illustrates the dynamics of human social relations through the examples of interactions between animals, athletes, country residents, and city dwellers. The lyrics and the video projections in this performance aurally and visually demonstrate human social interaction through the utilization and remixing of Serres’ text combined with new, original visual and sound media.
